Hello, and welcome to Raw & Real: Living The Unprocessed Life!

Not long ago, I was caught in that “complex web” so many of us recognize – the constant hum of stress, the nagging presence of anxiety, and a mind that often felt clouded and restless. I experienced those all-too-common companions: brain fog, fragmented sleep, and a persistent feeling of being ‘off,’ disconnected from my own vitality. Life felt like a continuous effort, a constant balancing act against unseen pressures. I was seeking something, though I wasn’t quite sure what.

But then, something profound shifted. A radical change in my lifestyle began to unravel that web, leading me to a clarity, energy, and inner peace I once thought were simply out of reach. This isn’t just about what I eat; it’s about how I live, how I think, and how I connect with the world around me.

The Turning Point: Embracing Nature’s Purity

My journey began with a growing curiosity, an intuitive pull toward something more fundamental. I started exploring the idea of a plant-based raw food lifestyle. At first, it felt like a bold step, a commitment to truly living ‘unprocessed,’ and listening to that deep inner voice urging me to explore ‘nature’s purest gifts.’

It certainly wasn’t an overnight transformation. Like any significant life change, there were adjustments and learning curves. I had to learn new ways to prepare food, rethink my grocery list, and often step outside my comfort zone. But with each raw meal, each bite of fresh fruit and vibrant vegetable, I felt a noticeable difference – a subtle but undeniable sense of alignment within my body and mind. It was as if every cell was breathing a sigh of relief.

The Transformation: A Ripple Effect of Well-being

The physical shifts were nothing short of incredible. Within weeks, my energy levels soared, that persistent brain fog lifted, and for the first time in what felt like ages, I started enjoying truly sound sleep. It was deep, restorative sleep that left me feeling genuinely refreshed and ready to embrace the day, not just drag myself through it.

This newfound vitality wasn’t just for daily tasks; it literally fueled me to push my limits. I started running again, pushing my boundaries, and now, at 66, I’m not just going strong, I’m enthusiastically training for my 8th marathon next year in March 2026! It’s an exhilarating feeling to have this kind of endurance and physical capability at this age.

But the impact stretched far beyond the physical. My mind achieved an astounding clarity. Stress and worry, once constant companions, simply began to fade into the background. My thoughts became focused and sharp, allowing me to dive deeper into everything I do. This clarity spills over into every aspect of my life – from intense work hours to the meticulous care of beekeeping, to the meditative rhythm of cleaning my pond, tidying the house, or even the simple, mindful act of washing dishes. There’s a heightened focus in every action.

And perhaps the most profound change was an unexpected one: a deep spiritual & meditative connection to nature. As an atheist, this isn’t tied to organized religion, but to a profound sense of inner peace, a harmony with the natural world, and a vibrant spirit that feels truly alive. It’s a deep appreciation for the interconnectedness of all things, a quiet confidence that resonates with my belief that IN NATURE WE TRUST. This peace also unlocked a fountain of creativity. I find myself writing more poems than ever before, feeling inspired to sing and enjoy music with a renewed passion. My internal world feels richer, more colorful, and more expressive.

Perhaps the most tangible proof of this transformation? At 66, this lifestyle has allowed me to happily keep doctors away, relying on the inherent healing and preventative power of nature’s purest gifts.

The “How”: Unraveling the Science of Raw & Real

It’s clear that this plant-based raw food lifestyle isn’t just a diet; it’s a powerful catalyst for holistic well-being. So, how does it all connect? It comes down to a beautiful interplay of mindset, physiology, and lifestyle ripple effects:

  • Mindset Reinforcement (A Powerful Positive Feedback Loop)

    Empowerment & Agency

Taking control of one’s diet is a profound step toward personal empowerment. When individuals actively choose what fuels their bodies, they cultivate a sense of agency. Research shows that having control over one’s health decisions can significantly reduce anxiety and feelings of helplessness. For instance, a study published in the Journal of Health Psychology found that individuals who perceived themselves as having more control over their health reported lower stress levels and improved overall well-being.

    Discipline & Consistency

Adopting a raw food lifestyle requires discipline and consistency. This commitment often translates to other areas of life. For example, a participant in a raw food program might find that the planning and preparation skills they develop for meal prepping also enhance their productivity at work or their training for a marathon. According to a survey by the American Psychological Association, 71% of individuals who set specific goals report achieving them, showcasing the power of discipline in fostering success across various life domains.

    Connection to Purpose & Values

Living in alignment with personal values, such as health and respect for nature, can enhance mental well-being. A study from the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health highlights that individuals who engage in environmentally friendly practices, like adopting a plant-based diet, often report higher levels of life satisfaction and purpose. This alignment can serve as a buffer against stress, providing a sense of meaning that combats anxiety.

    Increased Body Awareness

Heightened body awareness allows individuals to understand how different foods impact their mood and energy. A study in Nutritional Neuroscience noted that individuals who practice mindfulness around their eating habits experience improved emotional regulation and decision-making. For example, someone might notice that after consuming certain foods, they feel sluggish or irritable, prompting them to make more conscious dietary choices.

Physiological Impact (The Essential Body-Mind Connection)

    Nutrient Density & Bioavailability

Raw fruits, vegetables, nuts, and seeds are rich in essential nutrients. For example, a cup of spinach contains about 24% of the daily recommended intake of Vitamin A and 15% of Vitamin C, both crucial for cognitive function. Research indicates that diets high in nutrient-dense foods can lead to improved mental clarity and emotional stability. A study in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that higher fruit and vegetable intake is associated with better mood and lower rates of depression.

    Reduced Inflammation

A raw food diet is anti-inflammatory, which can lead to significant health benefits. For example, chronic inflammation has been linked to various health issues, including depression and cognitive decline. A meta-analysis published in Nature Reviews Neuroscience found that individuals with lower inflammatory markers had significantly lower rates of mood disorders. By reducing inflammation through a raw diet, individuals often experience improved mental clarity and reduced anxiety.

Improved Gut Health (The “Second Brain”)

A diverse, fiber-rich diet supports gut health, which is crucial for mental well-being. The gut microbiome produces neurotransmitters like serotonin, which regulates mood. According to research from Frontiers in Psychology, a healthy gut microbiome is associated with reduced anxiety and improved cognitive function. For example, individuals consuming a high-fiber diet rich in raw foods have been shown to have a more balanced gut microbiome, leading to better mood regulation.

Stable Energy Levels & Enhanced Endurance

Raw foods provide a stable release of energy, preventing blood sugar spikes. A study in the Journal of Applied Physiology found that individuals consuming a high-fiber diet demonstrated enhanced endurance during physical activities. For instance, runners following a raw food diet report improved stamina and recovery times, allowing them to train more effectively for events like marathons.

    Efficient Digestion & Toxin Reduction

The live enzymes in raw foods aid digestion, reducing the burden on the digestive system. Research indicates that a diet low in processed foods is associated with better digestive health. A study in BMC Gastroenterology found that individuals who eliminated processed foods reported fewer digestive issues and improved energy levels. For example, someone might notice that their bloating and fatigue decrease significantly after transitioning to a raw food diet.

    Lifestyle Ripple Effects

    Simplicity

Focusing on whole, raw foods simplifies meal preparation. For instance, a raw food enthusiast might opt for a simple salad of mixed greens, tomatoes, and avocados rather than complex recipes requiring extensive cooking. Research from the Journal of Consumer Research shows that simplifying choices can lead to less decision fatigue and increased satisfaction with food choices.

    New Routines

Establishing consistent routines around shopping and meal prep brings order to life. A participant in a raw food program might find joy in visiting local farmers’ markets weekly, creating a routine that fosters community connection and supports local agriculture. A study published in Health Psychology found that individuals with structured routines reported lower stress levels and improved mental health.

    Community

Finding a community of like-minded individuals provides social support. For example, participating in local raw food meetups or online forums can enhance motivation and accountability. A survey by the Pew Research Center found that 70% of people who engage in community activities report higher levels of happiness and belonging. This sense of community can be a powerful motivator for maintaining a raw food lifestyle.

This is a beautiful cycle I’ve created: healthy raw food fuels my body and mind, which in turn provides the energy, clarity, and peace for all my passions – from marathons to poetry, beekeeping to simply enjoying the present moment. These fulfilling activities then reinforce my positive lifestyle choices, creating a powerful virtuous cycle of holistic well-being. It’s a fantastic example of how truly holistic well-being works – when you nourish one part of yourself, it uplifts all other parts.
