Type 2 Diabetes Controlled Without Medication | 7 Marathons at 66 | Zero Complications

The Backstory
Sixteen years ago, I made a decision that most people thought was extreme, possibly dangerous, and definitely unconventional.
I committed to a 100% plant-based Raw Food lifestyle.
Not for a month. Not for a detox. Not as an experiment.
For life.
At the time, I wasn’t sick. I wasn’t overweight. I didn’t have obvious health problems.
I was simply curious: What if we’ve been doing this all wrong?
The Diagnosis That Changed Everything
Shortly after adopting this lifestyle, I was diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes.
Most people in my situation would have immediately gone on medication. Their doctors would have prescribed metformin, insulin, or both.
Instead, I made a different choice: I doubled down on Raw Food.
My doctor was skeptical. My family was concerned. My friends thought I was being reckless.
But I trusted the process.
The Results (The Data Doesn’t Lie)
Fast forward 16 years. Here’s what my medical records show:
Diabetes Control:
- HbA1C: 5.9% (Excellent control – normal range is 4.6-7.4%)
- NO medication – controlled entirely through diet
- Estimated Average Glucose: 124 mg/dL – stable and healthy
Kidney Function:
- Creatinine: 0.94 mg/dL (optimal)
- Microalbumin/Creatinine: <8.7 (excellent – well below the 30 threshold)
- Zero kidney damage despite 16+ years with diabetes
Liver Health:
- ALT: 21 units/L (dropped from 44 in 2004)
- 52% improvement in liver function over 21 years
- No fatty liver disease, no inflammation
Cardiovascular Health:
- Blood Pressure: 133/68 (“at great level” per my physician)
- Total Cholesterol: 183 mg/dL (desirable range)
- Triglycerides: 100 mg/dL (recovered from COVID-19 lockdown spike)
- HDL: 57 mg/dL (protective level)
- Triglyceride/HDL Ratio: 1.75 (excellent, goal is <2.0)
Diabetic Complications:
- Eyes: No diabetic retinopathy
- Feet: Category 0 – Normal (no neuropathy)
- Kidneys: Zero damage
- Heart: Excellent function
Athletic Performance:
- 7 marathons completed (26.2 miles each)
- Currently training for my 8th at age 66
- Resting heart rate: 61 bpm (endurance athlete range)
- BMI: 22.74 (ideal for health and longevity)

The COVID-19 Reality Check
I want to be completely transparent about something important.
During the COVID-19 lockdown (2020-2022), my triglycerides spiked to 224 mg/dL – well above the normal range.
Why? Lack of physical movement.
When outdoor activities were restricted, I learned a critical lesson:
Diet alone isn’t enough. Movement is essential.
The good news? Once I resumed my marathon training, my triglycerides dropped back to 100 mg/dL.
This taught me that optimal health requires both living foods and physical activity.
